Amalfi
We caught the high speed train from Florence to Amalfi (I think I paid twice, once on line and once at the window) and enjoyed the spectacularly comfortable travel that the service provides. Our final destination was Salerno, where we waited almost an hour for the next bus to Amalfi. Little did we know !
The bus trip from Salerno to Amalfi was something else. We had front row seats almost opposite the driver, and on plenty of turns you could look down and see nothing except waves and rocks some 20 metres below you. It was white knuckle stuff, not fast (in an absolute sense), but a couple of 3-point turns and plenty of games of bluff at blind corners. At one stage I commented to Leanne that it must be a windy bit coming up because the driver was finally steering with 2 hands !
When we arrived at night, we got our bags from the bus and then burst into laughter as the adrenaline wore off. Finally checked into our Hotel (Hotel Residence - a converted private palace from an earlier time) right on the beach - non-peak tourist time :)
The photos I took from our balcony as the sun rose the next morning give some idea of the scene - spectacular. Some of our plans were scuttled by the off-peak season - no boats to Sorento for example. In the end, the intrepid Leanne braved the bus trip not once, but twice more, to do a solo day trip to Pompeii (I had already been) while I walked to the top of the hills behind Amalfi and took a LOT of photos.
